AC Milan coach Stefano Pioli says Theo Hernandez's long-term position could be at centre-half.
The left-back has shone in the makeshift role in recent games.
Pioli said: "I think he is a very strong and intelligent player: with this move he is trying to extend his career. He has the physical, technical and tactical means to be able to play where he feels he can play best.
"We'll see what to do. He can play anywhere and it's the classic example that when a player is motivated, he can play anywhere if you really want to help the team."
Asked if Theo's new role can change their January market plans, the coach added: "It could but it also takes time. Things in football also change quickly. Before taking fixed positions and making future hypotheses, it still takes a little while. of time."
