Carrick: Newcastle players must learn from Bournemouth FAYC thrashing

Newcastle United coach Graeme Carrick wants his players to learn from a recent humbling.

The young Magpies were beaten 5-0 by AFC Bournemouth's youth team in the FA Youth Cup.

While they have exited the competition in the round of 32 stage, Carrick believes that his team can gain from such experiences.

Carrick told Chronicle Live: "It was certainly a tough night for all of us involved. It did not go to plan and it was tough. We didn't start the way we wanted and they got an early goal. I thought we responded OK to that in terms of taking the ball and creating chances without looking dangerous.

"It was a good response to such an early setback but the second goal was the real sucker punch. We did not respond well to that, went messy for a period and the game went away from us in that period.

"One of the big learning points for us is not to go chasing the game too early. We became disorganized whilst we were attacking which left the spaces for them to hurt us when the ball changed hands.

"We knew coming in they'd be a threat coming in, they have some good players. But we are disappointed as it didn't go the way we wanted."
