Reading have sold vice-captain Tom Holmes to a Premier League club on his request.
The 23-year-old has signed for Luton Town in a deal that has shocked many Reading supporters.
While Holmes is now a Luton player, he will be spending the rest of this season back on loan at Reading.
Hatters manager Rob Edwards said, per the BBC: "Tom is one that we've been tracking for a while. He is very experienced already, even though he's fairly young."
A Reading statement said: "Everyone at the club would like to congratulate Tom on his move, and look forward to working with him for the rest of the season."
Reading are in financial trouble, which has led to this and other personnel decisions this winter.
